"Their motivation for the carnage: To silence a publication that had produced and distributed images they found blasphemous, in particular illustrations of the Islamic prophet, Muhammad."
The terrorist attacks on French satire periodical
Charlie Hebdo's office were interpreted internationally
as an assault on free speech. Free media outlets around the globe immediately set to work crafting their front pages to promote solidarity with the slain journalists and their surviving colleagues. "
The phrase “Je Suis Charlie” or “I Am Charlie” began trending on social media and at observances and appeared in news coverage around the world." Cover such as this one from Canadian paper,
La Presse, are meant to be a somber tribute to the journalists who died that day. The head line, "La Liberte Assassinee," translates to "freedom murdered". The simple black and white motif, with blood-red lines over 12 pencils are meant to convey the loss of the 12 victims. It is plain to see that the creator of this front page wanted to illustrate the tragedy in a respectful but powerful manner.
