Shark Finning Bans in the EU- 21 February, 2019
In the article ‘EU Tightens Ban on Shark Finning’, the author immediately states that there is an existing ban on shark finning--but has “loopholes”! This statement immediately causes the reader to feel concerned and confused yet interested...what could the loophole be? Questions like this are bound to race through your mind as you read the article. In the article, it says “finning is deemed cruel because the fins are often removed while the shark is still alive--it then drowns when it is thrown back into the sea”, which is a very effective line because you can’t help but feel sorry for the shark because it must be excruciatingly painful to have body parts cut off from the body while fully conscious. Additionally, the author then goes on to say that “finning [has contributed] to a serious decline in shark population” which strikes fear in the reader that we may one day live without these magnificent creatures. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-22795349
