Did
you know that Ernest Hemingway, one of the most well-known American
novelists and journalists, was a spy for both United States government and Soviet
during Spanish Civil War, World War II, and Cold War?
Nicholas
Reynolds, a former CIA agent and the author of the book “Writer, Sailor, Soldier,
Spy: Ernest Hemingway's Secret Adventures, 1935-1961”, states: “The records of
Hemingway’s relationship with the NKVD showed that a Soviet operative had
recruited him on ideological grounds.”
From
the Spanish Civil War to the end of World War II, Hemingway used his reputation
to fight fascism which made him become a promising candidate for both US and Soviet
intelligence agencies. Gradually, Hemingway became more active in fighting against
fascism.
