Since “[the] majority of web traffic is driven by the major commercial search engines”(source), it’s important for websites to rank well on search engines, such as Google. When’s the last time you’ve went to page 2 of the results? I’m betting most people don’t even go beyond the first half of the first page. Because of this, businesses want to rank as close to the top as possible, ideally achieving the first result on the first page. As always, if there’s a need for a service, at least one company will offer it. And, the internet is no exception. The industry for helping websites rank well is known as SEO, or search engine optimization. In essence, SEO is not about cheating the ranking algorithm, but about ensuring search engines can understand what your webpage is about.
