Front Page News: Walk Out

After looking at dozens of newspaper covers about the 2018 March out over Gun violence, I noticed
that there are two main ways that the newspaper decides to tell this story. While all of the pictures are
quite similar, depicting dozens of kids walking out of their school, these two types of newspapers show
a completely different story. The first two newspapers “Students Stand Up For Safety” and “Students
Decry Gun Violence in Protest” have titles that clearly show that this walk was in protest to gun
violence. The last two articles, “Students Stand For ‘Those Who Lost Lives to Guns’” and “Students
Walk Out For Parkland Victims” depict that the walk out was a way to mourn the lives of those lost in
school shootings. Although both stories are true, each newspaper makes one point more clear than
the other; whether the walk out was for gun violence or to mourn lives that were lost. The first two
articles are most likely aimed toward an audience that is liberal because many liberals want to make
change and have stricter gun laws, while the last two articles are most commonly aimed toward an
audience that is conservative because many conservatives don’t want to make stricter gun laws.
