Instagram Versus Snapchat

The battle between Instagram and Snapchat is growing stronger as the two social media platforms continue to copy features from one another. With so many similarities, it can be hard to spot the differences in the two platforms, but there are actually quite a few.

The biggest difference between Instagram and Snapchat is that Snapchat only keeps news stories posted for up to 24 hours. Any news from the previous day is deleted on Snapchat to make way for the new and interesting. This can be a con for people trying to do research on a topic or share a story with friends and family. However, it is the same feature that keeps the app new and interesting for viewers. Snapchat also has a set discover page with all the news in one place. Some people may find this convenient, while others dislike not having the option to avoid news on social media.

While Instagram has a story feature like Snapchat, users must actively seek out and subscribe to news pages to view that content on their dashboard. In Gizmodo’s article “5 Reasons to Ditch Snapchat for Instagram If You Haven’t Already,” reason number three is the ability to avoid branding associated with advertisements and news sources. Even when branding is apparent on the social media platform, Gizmodo says “Instagram brands are tasteful” unlike Snapchat. With Instagram, audiences will also see a lot more in the category of photojournalism, which can be a nice change of scenery from all the reading involved with long articles. Many people prefer Instagram because it provides users with the flexibility to decide how they view content.
