Newspapers: Image Size

As I was looking at various newspapers published in the U.S., I notices that the photos that they placed on their front pages varied in sizes. In the two Alaskan newspaper's above, the Daily Sitka Sentinel has two images that are quite close in size while The Juneau Empire has three photographs of different sizes. By using a large image of "hundreds of people [attending]....[a] Save the Alaska Marine Highway System rally" with picket signs quoting their stance on Alaska's governors actions against the state's ferry system, The Juneau Empire is able to draw readers' attention to the main news article featured in the newspaper. In contrast, with two photos of virtually the same size the Daily Sitka Sentinel has no way of attracting people to read or buy their paper like The Juneau Empire is able to. For this reason, having larger images on more important news articles on the front page is an effective strategy for promoting a newspaper's sales. [2 images, 2 links, 1 quotation, 164 words]
