California man was sentenced to 20 years in prison, after he made a prank hostage call to authorities, which resulted in an innocent Kansas resident to lose their life, after being fatally shot by the police out of misidentification. After analyzing the moments leading up to the tragedy, they concluded that "On Dec. 28, 2017, Barriss, who lives in Los Angeles, contacted police to say he was at a home in Wichita, Kansas, where he claimed he had fatally shot his father and was holding the rest of the family hostage" (Madani, 2019). Andrew Finch, 28, fell victim to confusion surrounding his home, where he was unsure of what to do as police bombarded his residence. Finch's family is wanting to sue to police, as well as the city of Wichita, as they did not effectively protect the life of Mr. Finch.
