How Fast does Fake News Travel on Social Media?
News tends to travel a lot quicker in today's age with the increasing presence of social media. Communicative apps like Instagram and Twitter are a great place for news to be placed and people will run with it and spread that news all over the internet. However, fake news and lies spread like wildfire in comparison to the truth. “Falsehood diffused significantly farther, faster, deeper, and more broadly than the truth in all categories of information, and the effects were more pronounced for false political news than for false news about terrorism, natural disasters, science, urban legends, or financial information,”said the team led by Sinan Aral of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the Journal Science. Whenever news gets an opportunity to spread on social media, big news sites take the news and put it on the front page of their websites and that's when the fake news has fully spread. When the truth comes out, there's often either a collective sigh given by the internet because we were hoping the news wasn't true and other times there's a disappointment because the fake news is much more interesting than the real thing.
