Front Page News - 12/6/2013

On December 6th, 2013, Nelson Mandela passed away. Mandela was an anti-apartheid politician and president of South Africa from 1994 - 1999. He's known and revered for leading negotiations to end apartheid and for openly protesting unjust laws.
His passing in 2013 at the age of 95 was covered in newspapers across the world, with some of them celebrating his legacy and others grieving. The New York Times dedicated the front page of their newspaper to telling about Mandela's death, complete with a somber, almost all-black photo of him and the line "South Africa's Conqueror of Apartheid As Fighter, Prisoner, President and Symbol" above it. The headline honors him, his work, and has a thankful tone, whereas the photo is symbolic of loss and death.
The Montgomery Advertiser uses a more colorful, cheerful photo of Mandela. The coloring is bright, nearly yellow, and Mandela is smiling in the photo. This conveys the feeling of gratuity towards Mandela for all he has done in the name of justice. The headline in this publication is "Alabamians mourn", revealing that Mandela has died and it's left many filled with loss. [186 words, 2 images, 1 link, 2 quotes]
