Front Page News - 8/30/2005

On August 30, 2005, hurricane Katrina hit the gulf coast and wrecked multiple states. People's homes, cars, belongings, and lives were ruined by this natural disaster. Newspapers across the country reported on the death and damage caused by hurricane Katrina, including The Anniston Star and the Mobile Register. Both of these publications included images that convey how truly damaging this storm was.

The Anniston Star has a large photo of an American Red Cross truck flooded up to the bottom of the windshield, sitting in the street. Trying to imagine water levels that high is difficult to do unprompted, but with an image like this it becomes an unfortunate reality. The headline, "Killer Katrina", is meant to ignite fear in readers as they realize that dozens of people are dead because of this horrible storm.

The Mobile Register has a similar effect with its headline of "Katrina kills 55". To think that 55 people had their lives ended by a hurricane is shocking and chilling. Underneath this headline is a photo of a man sitting with his head in his hands in the rubble of a home. This image brings to life the destruction this storm caused, it forces readers to realize that entire houses were demolished due to this storm. [211 words, 2 images, 1 link, 2 quotes]
