Polluting Storm Drains in Allen, Texas

There has suddenly been an increase in the amount of pollutants that are winding up in our drinking water and some individuals have traced it back to our backyards. For example, many pet owners believe that their dog's feces are fertilizers like cows and horses. However, dogs and cats have very "high-protein diets that result in highly acidic waste" (Allen Image Magazine Feb. Issue Pg. 9). So when rains comes, the acidic waste is washed into the storm drains which then run into our drinking water outlets. Another example is when people pour their grass and bush trimmings into the drains as a way to get rid of them; however, they what they are not realizing is that those trimmings are clogging up the drains and it's a lot of work to get them out. Many advocates are suggesting other ways to dispose of waste like that, such as putting them in bags and setting them out on the trash days. With better control of what we are allowing to go down our drains, our city will be more safe and friendly than ever before.
