The New STEAM Center

Construction for Allen ISD's new facility, The STEAM Center, started in 2015 when the bond passed to buy the land off Alma and 121. The STEAM Center stands for science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. The goal of the STEAM Center is to "[engage] young students in STEAM subjects [which] will help eliminate preconceived notions" (Allen Image Magazine March Issue Pg. 24-25) about career fields regarding the aspects of STEAM. Most classes that are related to anything in STEAM will be hosted at that center instead of at the main schools. However, controversy has risen when thinking about transportation back and forth between campuses. Many parents have voiced that their child's education will be limited because the amount of time that it takes to go from the main high school to the STEAM center is longer than the current passing periods. The school district is planning on cutting the time of those classes at the new center in order to accommodate the travel time that it takes to get to them. Although the center has many advantages, it will be a big change to the community and the students routines when the 2019-2020 school year comes around.
