Pope Francis met with Sudanese government officials and opposition leaders on Thursday to encourage the continuation of their fragile peace. He even went as far in a dramatic gesture to get onto his hands and knees and kissed their shoes. "I am asking you with my heart, stay in peace." pope said to President Salva Kirr and opposition leader Riek Machar, during a spiritual retreat in Rome. South Sudan gained independence from Sudan in 2011 with the backing of many Western Nations, but a civil war interrupted two years later, killing at least 400,000 citizens. The conflict began as a feud between members loyal to Kirr and Machar. The pope beg for the two leaders to find common ground before kneeling before them and kissing their shoes.
